Microsoft Windows is a series of operating systems for personal computers. The first version of Windows, released in 1985, was simply a graphical user interface (GUI) that ran on top of the MS-DOS operating system. It was designed to make it easier for users to interact with their computers using a mouse and a graphical interface, rather than typing commands in a command prompt.


Over the years, Windows has evolved significantly, with new versions being released periodically to add new features and improve performance. Some of the major versions of Windows include:


Windows 3.0: Released in 1990, this version introduced the now-iconic Start menu and support for virtual memory.


Windows 95: Released in 1995, this version was a major update that introduced support for long filenames and plug and play hardware. It also introduced the taskbar and the concept of windows that could be resized and moved around on the desktop.


Windows XP: Released in 2001, this version introduced a new visual style and improved networking capabilities. It was widely used for many years and was eventually succeeded by Windows Vista.


Windows Vista: Released in 2006, this version introduced a new visual style and improved security features. It was not as well-received as some previous versions of Windows and was succeeded by Windows 7.


Windows 7: Released in 2009, this version introduced a new taskbar and support for touch screens. It was widely popular and remains in use on many computers today.


Windows 8: Released in 2012, this version introduced a new interface optimized for touch screens and a redesigned Start screen. It was not as well-received as some previous versions of Windows and was succeeded by Windows 10.


Windows 10: Released in 2015, this version introduced support for virtual assistants, such as Cortana, and the ability to run universal apps across all devices. It is the current version of Windows and is the most widely used version of the operating system.
